Does your team see good from your heart in your communication? (136-1)
A leader’s heart shows up in their communication and will either instill confidence or fear in their team. Read Proverbs 13:2.
No amount of skill or technique will compensate for a leader’s empty or evil heart. Verse two in The Living Bible says it this way, “The good man wins his case by careful argument; the evil-minded only wants to fight.” Jesus put it this way in Matthew 12:35, “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.” A leader’s communication is simply an overflow from their heart.
When a leader is motivated by a sense of weakness, need, or emptiness their communication will ultimately be focused on self. When a leader has a sense of strength, vitality and fullness their communication can focus on the good of the organization or their team or both.
If your communication to your team indicates you are more concerned about them than yourself they will invest themselves heavily in the organization and your leadership. If your team senses that your interests are self motivated they will give less than their best, protect themselves from being emotionally hurt and always be alert for a better opportunity where they can be fully appreciated.
In the Bible, Jesus is the ultimate communicator of good over evil. He knew who He was and was secure enough to communicate His desire to serve His team even through a humbling act of service (see John 13:3-5). Jesus Christ was the most powerful leader to ever walk the face of the earth and He was also the most humble. The humility in Christ’s heart showed in His communication with his team. Jesus incarnation itself was a profound act of love communicated by the Father. Leaders who are truly effective communicators allow their communication to flow from the heart not simply the mouth.
Does your team see good from your heart in your communication? What one thing can you do this week to expose good from your heart to your team? This may sound like a simple change in communication style but don’t be fooled. If a leader is self-centered it will require a change of the leader’s heart and core truths to truly change what is communicated.
Matthew 15:18 “The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart.”
