It takes a lifetime of consistent behavior, made up of small everyday actions, for a leader to be known for their humility. Read 1 Chronicles 17:1-27.
David has been established firmly as king of Israel. He has established Jerusalem as his capitol city. David has built a beautiful palace for himself in Jerusalem. He has moved the Ark of the Covenant, a holy object God instructed Moses to build as His home on earth, from the countryside to Jerusalem. It is at this time that David realized that he is living in luxury but no temple has ever been built for a home to the Ark of the Covenant. He calls Nathan the prophet and tells him he desires to build a magnificent temple to house the Ark of the Covenant. Nathan considers the idea and tells David to go ahead with the project.
There are several actions a leader can take to pass leadership to a successor they have chosen to take their place. Read 1 Kings 1:28-40.
Transitions in leadership often cause significant problems for groups and organizations. David planned for his son Solomon’s succession but failed to adequately communicate this to others. As a result, his son, Adonijah, attempted to take the throne when he saw that his father could no longer rule. It is one thing to plan ahead but another to communicate these plans to others who will be affected by them.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts,” Winston Churchill. David’s moral failures in seducing another man’s wife and then finding a way to cause that man’s death could have derailed his leadership of Israel but his failure was not final. Read 2 Samuel 12:13-31.
David demonstrated several actions and attitudes that can help any leader survive a major failure:

Joseph was the son of Jacob’s old age. He was intelligent, favored by his father and had God’s hand on him. Joseph had a lot of natural leadership gifts but he didn’t have experience, people skills, discipline, humility or good timing.
