Do you have the ability to identify and understand your team’s feelings or difficulties? (158-4)
Leaders must have empathy if they are to lead over the long haul. Read Jeremiah 4:19-26.
The people of Judah had broken their covenant with God and had rebelled against His leadership. Jeremiah had confronted the nation’s leaders and had foretold the consequences for their failure to change. He knew that if God had said it the prophecy would come true. He knew that the people would suffer. He knew they deserved to be disciplined for their actions. He knew the discipline was good for the nation and the people. Yet in verse 19 we see the agony in his heart for what lay ahead for the people.

Do you have the appropriate balance between power and compassion? (153-3)
Christian leaders should have leadership qualities that reflect the leadership qualities of Christ. Read Isaiah 40:9-11.

We see God as a powerful, merciful Father who nourishes, guides, and protects His people as a good shepherd would care for His flock. Everyday leaders can learn a lot from Isaiah’s description of a powerful yet gentle nurturing leader.

Do you seek mutual understanding before you label communication complete. (150-1)
A leader’s goal when communicating should be to establish mutual understanding between all those involved. Read Isaiah 6:9.
After God called Isaiah into service He gave him information that his assignment would be very difficult. God forewarned Isaiah that there would be communication problems. Even though Isaiah would be giving totally accurate information, there would be no communication because the people would refuse to listen or understand. The people had no choice but to hear the words but they allowed them to pass through their conscious mind without changing their core truths or their behavior.

Are there members of your team that create a negative environment? (141-4)
Wise leaders understand that every member of their team is critical to the team’s performance. Read Proverbs 25:4-5.
Verses four and five are designed to be read together to make a single point. Similar to removing impurities from precious metal to make it valuable, an organization needs to remove corrupt (wicked) individuals from their team to make it a quality, effective team.
